NFC vs RFID vs Bluetooth
NFC is a subset of RFID built for very short range — under 4 cm — and two-way communication. That short range is a feature: a customer has to deliberately tap to interact, which makes accidental scans virtually impossible.
Bluetooth, by contrast, works across a room but needs pairing, batteries and an app. NFC needs none of those things, which is why it's the standard for tap-to-pay, transit cards and connected packaging.
Do customers need an app?
No. Every iPhone since the iPhone 7 and every modern Android phone reads NFC tags natively. The phone scans constantly while unlocked; when a tag is detected, a notification appears with the destination URL. There's no install step and no friction.
