NFC stickers vs NFC hangtags: which should you choose?

Near field communication stickers and NFC hangtags both let a phone tap a product and open a URL — but they're built for very different jobs. Here's how to decide which format fits your launch.

What is an NFC sticker?

An NFC sticker is a thin adhesive label with an embedded NFC chip and antenna. It's typically used for inventory tagging, asset tracking and quick proof-of-concepts. The chip works, but the format is utilitarian — a sticker on a box rarely belongs on the customer-facing side of a premium product.

What is an NFC hangtag?

An NFC hangtag is a produced tag — paper, kraft, plastic or metal — with the chip encapsulated inside. It hangs from apparel, footwear or accessories the way any retail hangtag does, but every tap opens a destination you control: a lookbook, an authentication record, a limited-drop landing page.

When stickers still make sense

If you're testing an interactive concept internally, tracking inventory in a warehouse, or running a small pilot before committing to a production run, NFC stickers are a reasonable starting point. They're cheap and fast.

When to step up to a hangtag or insert

For anything that reaches a paying customer — apparel drops, sneaker releases, collectible packaging, event giveaways — choose a hangtag or packaging insert. The chip is the same; the presentation, durability and authentication options are not.
